Dnepropetrovsk was founded in 1776 by order of Catherine II and in her honor was named Ekaterinoslav. Its rapid growth as well as development of all present Dnepropetrovsk area was at the end of XIX century when Krivorozhsky iron ore field was opened and the Ekaterina's railway was constructed. Then the building of the largest metal works begun.

 

Dnepropetrovsk is one of the largest industrial, economic and transport centers, the center of metallurgy and space capital of Ukraine. Ferrous metallurgy, metal working, mechanical engineering and other branches of the heavy industry are especially developed here.

By data for June, 2009 the population of Dnepropetrovsk made 1 million 016 thousand people. The city is famous for inhabited houses-skyscrapers, and also the longest quay in Europe — 23 km on the right coast of Dnepr.

 

Being a million-population city, Dnepropetrovsk is very attractive to advertisers. It occupies 4th place in the list of distribution of the OOH- advertising budgets on cities of Ukraine, competing with Donetsk.

Nikopol — an administrative center of Nikopol area and the oldest city of the Dnepropetrovsk area. The population of Nikopol makes about 127 thousand people (as of 1.03.2009), however taking into account inhabitants of all Nikopol agglomerations (Ordzhonikidze-nikopol-manganese) in total of 230 thousand inhabitants.

 

Dneprodzerzhinsk is located on a place of 2 Cossack villages — Romankovo and Kamenskoe, the first mentions about which go to XVIII century and which were a part Cossacks of the Zaporozhye Army.

For today it is the third on value city of area after Dnepropetrovsk and Krivoi Rog. According to data from 2001, the city population was 256 thousand persons.

47 large industrial factories work in Dneprodzerzhinsk. In industrial production structure of the city, metallurgy and metal processing, chemical branch, coke manufacture, mechanical engineering, manufacture of building materials, electric power industry, wood-processing, food and light industry prevail.
