Till 1954 the Khmelnitsky was called Proskurov, it has almost 600-year-old history which conducts from small settlement Ploskirov on the river Ploskoi.
The city history is closely connected with liberation war of Bogdan Khmelnitskiy, battles between Cossacks and the Polish armies repeatedly took place here. For 27 years in the end of XVII century the city was under the authority of Ottoman empire.
In XVIII century Ploskirov was a part of Podolsk province of Russian empire, and then it was renamed in Proskurov though official orders for this occasion are not found.
City industrial development began during Soviet time, however has strongly suffered during the reorganization period. From the beginning of 90th of ХХ century the city Khmelnitskiy was a large center of marketing. Here is the wholesale market "Tolkuchka", or "Tucha", the third in Europe on sales volumes. The markets occupy 1/3 territories of Khmelnitskiy, and it means, that a large amount of people visit the city. Therefore the number - 290 thousand people (2009) is conditional.
Quantity of “RTM-UKRAINE” carriers in Khmelnitskiy — 19.
