Modern Kirovograd area was a part of that territory, where, on the boundary of XV-XVI centuries the Cossacks were arisen. The city was founded in 1754 as a fortress of Saint Elizabeth and was named Elisavetgrad. During Soviet time the city was first named Zinovevsky, then Kirov and, at last, Kirovograd since 1939

Despite position of "a district city”, many outstanding persons are connected with a name of Kirovograd: Vladimir Vinnichenko, Yaroslav Ivashkevich, Ivan Karpenko-Karov, Mark Kropivnitskogo, Jury Olesha, Arseny Tarkovsky, Igor Krutoi …

 

The city population is more than 250 thousand people, according to 2001 census. Administratively the city is divided into 2 areas — Kirovskiy and Leninskiy.
