The Vinnitsa territory was occupied in ancient times: on the present territory of a city settlements of Scythian and Old Russian tribes are found.
Here passed borders of the Wild field in the Middle Ages, and after a victory of the Lithuanian army over Golden Horde Lithuanians have started to build a fortified city on these earths. Then, in 1362, Vinnitsa was founded. At first it was the castle on border with the Wild field which burnt down from time to time and was rebuilt again. Vinnitsa received the status of a city and the Magdeburg rights in 1580.
Vinnitsa occupies the central position on the Vinnitsa region map, automobile and railway roads disperse from it like beams.
The main sights: memorial estate of N.I.Pirogov, literary-memorial museum of M.M.Kotsjubinsky, the Troitsky Cathedral.
