Zhitomir is the largest city of Polessky region of Volyn, one of the oldest historical and cultural cities of Ukraine. 884th year is considered to be the date of Zhitomir foundation. By data for 1.07.2009, the city population is 271 348 people
The city is located in surprisingly beautiful district, on coast of Dnepr of small river Teterev and small river Kamenka. Small rivers Yaroshenka and Putyatinka flow through a city, there are lots of parks and squares in Zhitomir itself. Several sanatoriums known across the whole Ukraine are located in the city and in suburban park-zone.
Among sights of Zhitomir the bridge through Teterev in the park of Gagarin is named. Besides a wonderful view on the ancient areas of a city located on mountains Ohrimovaya, Zamkovaya and Petrovskaya over the river Kamenka, now the bridge is actively used for rope-jumping, and Zhitomir, as a result, becomes one of points of extreme tourism in Ukraine.
As Zhitomir is located on ancient Brest-Lithuanian ways from Kiev to the Western Ukraine and to Europe, the city developed as large transport knot. Now there passes international road "Kiev-Chop", road to Mogilyov-Podolsk, to Chernovtsy, to Stavishe and to Belarus begin from Zhitomir — through a check point on the Ukrainian-Belarus border.
